Sciatica:

I work as a Computer Contractor and occasionally there is a requirement to relocate PC's as part of an office reorganisation. After one such move, as I was lying in bed I felt a sharp pain on left side of my lower back. I tried to ignore it but then I started getting cramp in my right leg. I tried to stand up but couldn't, I tried to lie down but the pain was too great. It was a terrible feeling and I couldn't understand why if the pain was on the left side of my back, my right leg was not operating properly. In the morning as I could not drive, I had to be taken to see my GP who diagnosed sciatica. A nerve must have trapped itself somewhere and it was quite likely at the point where the nerve crosses over which was why a nerve trapped on the left side was affecting my right leg. The Doctor also said that I would be off work for 3 months, at least.

As a Contractor this was definitely not good news. If I didn't go to work I wouldn't be paid. Furthermore any contractor off for such a long period of time would simply be replaced and as there was potential for extension this potentially meant a quite considerable loss of income.

Although the painkillers prescribed did deaden the pain, I still couldn't drive and even standing up for a few minutes was extremely painful. As there was no physical cause of the pain, I needed to find a quicker method of overcoming this problem.

I opted for EEG Neurofeedback training in the hope that it would help ease the pain. The changes were quite dramatic. After the first session, the muscle pain in my right leg stopped. The next session eased the pain in my my back so that I could begin to sit up again and what was even better I could drive again. After the next session I found I could lift pc's again, albeit more slowly than before but at least life was returning to normal. After five sessions I was able to go back to work which in my case means driving 100 miles in the morning and driving 100 miles back in the evening and doing whatever else is required in one of the largest open plan offices in Europe.

Without EEG Neurofeedback I would have:

  • probably lost a potentially long term contract.

  • been off work for at least 3 months without pay.

  • not been able to return to work as quickly as I did.
