Chronic Pain:I have suffered from chronic back pain for ten years, and have tried many treatments - both conventional and alternative - for pain relief. Nothing has had any lasting effect. However, Dr Surinder Kaur, a pioneer of EEG Neurofeedback training, has found the root of my problem: chronic pain patterns had been established in my brain. Having suffered from (work-related) stress in my early twenties, a whiplash-style injury sustained in a gym, I developed a stiff neck and, progressively, deep-seated shoulder and back pain. Although the pain was caused by the injury, I did not realise that a psychological problem (depression) also developed, and this made a overall condition worse. However, I still tried to tackle the problem with physical treatments (osteopathy, chiropractic, physiotherapy etc), and I spent a lot of money, but achieved nothing. I lived in tine hope that the next treatment I found would be the holy grail of pain relief. It never was. Until now. EEG Neurofeedback can reach the cause or physical injury by stimulating brain function, which boosts the immune system and speeds up the healing process. Brain wave patterns will be ‘out of kilter' after an injury, so with EEG Neurofeedback, they can be tweaked and encouraged to normalise. In my case, the initial whiplash injury led to a chronic pain condition, so I had more EEG Neurofeedback training than someone would need for a muscular injury that leads to mild symptoms or acute pain. During EEG Neurofeedback training, I could actually feel the pain drain away. As my brain ‘learns' to behave differently, so I am released from the grip of chronic pain for the first time in ten years. CONQUERING NEGATIVITY AND REALISING PEAK PERFORMANCE I have discovered useful ‘byproducts' of EEG Neurofeedback training. I have learnt to recognise negative mental patterns and disarm them with positive thinking, whereas before I considered this perceptive turnaround to be impossible. I can ‘feel' that my brain has discovered and learned to exercise new ‘muscles.' Just as stomach exercises improve tone and posture (which increases physical confidence), EEG Neurofeedback exercises the brain and improves it function (which creates a sense of mental clarity and well-being). I work as a script analyst in the film industry, and my concentration capabilities, which were already good, have improved dramatically. I can read, assimilate. and analyse narratives for hours with only short breaks, and can work late at night (before EEG Neurofeedback I lost concentration when reading without natural light). To some extent I can control pain, concentration and mood-swings by ‘listening' to my brain, just as we `listen' to our bodies (i.e we feed it when its hungry and rest it when it is tired). Although this may sound obvious - even to the uninitiated many of us do not realise how much we can influence and control our brain function. Francesca Franklyn
